Victor Hugo's tone & purpose of JVJ

Victor Hugo would have bad feeling for Jean Valjean because of all the struggles he had gone through, but looking at the bright side he turned himself from a monster to a saint after he realized all the bad things he had done. He saved people when they where in need and most importantly he took care of Cosette who she was being abused, ignored, and beaten. Valjean educated and raised her. The propose of putting Jean Valjean was Victor Hugo wanting to show that men who have been in jail for crime, or struggles with poverty can improve with just changing the way they live in there environment or thinking for whats best for them. Jean Valjean for example was thought as a complete criminal that he had nothing in him, but then he learns all the bad thing that he had done and decided to start a new life as another person with another personality.

Development of the Theme

What Builds up the theme of Jean Valjean is when he is thrown into jail for stealing a loaf of bread for 5 years, and then he attempts to escape from jail leaving him in there for twenty years. After being released he still commits the same crime he did before being thrown into jail. Fist the Bishop Myriel offers Valjean a room to stay in the night, and then he steals the silverware, but Myriel tells him to take them, and promises Valjean to be an honest person. And Last, without understanding what Myriel promised him, he steals a coin from a boy named Petit Gervais, but then he realizes that the bad things he is doing is ruining his life. This theme is also described in the Musical of song called “Overture/At the End of the Day”. Where Jean Valjean and the other prisoners are suffering while the guards are keeping watch or torturing them. In the other song “What have I done?” is the part where he realizes the bad things he has done in the past and, he starts a new life with his new name Monseiur Madeleine.

Jean Valjean (Degradation of man by Poverty)

Jean Valjean was created to portray the Theme: Degradation of man by Poverty. It all starts when he steals a loaf of bread; he is then caught and thrown into jail for twenty years. The Bishop Myriel offers Jean Valjean a room to sleep at night, at that night he wakes up and steal the bishop's silverware and silver plates, and runs off into the night. He is stopped by a police and discovers the silverware in his knapsack and takes him back to Myriel’s house. To everyone’s surprise, Myriel claims that he gave the silverware to Valjean and even chides Valjean for having forgotten to take the silver candlesticks as well. Valjean is immediately released. Myriel gives Valjean the candlesticks and tells him that in taking the candlesticks, he has made a promise to become an honest man. Still bitter and not understanding what the bishop is talking about, that afternoon he steals a forty-sous piece from a chimney sweep, Petit Gervais. He accidentally put his foot on it and drove the boy away since he annoyed him with his pleas. After doing that, he is shocked at what he had done, he tries to find the boy, but he was never found. This is a turning point in his life; Valjean realises that he has fallen low enough to rob a defenseless child and that now, he has to become either good or bad.
